How to keep the cut flowers fresh.

Keep the cut flowers fresh, is what we spontaneously have in our mind when we get a bunch of beautiful flowers in our arms. Whether we buy those flowers or we get them from someone, we usually tend to “save” the flowers immediately.

Here are some tips to keep cut flowers fresh :

1. Find a proper size of vase / container. Get the right size for your bunch of flowers. Don’t put them into a vase / container that’s too small. Cram them into a small container will make the flowers unable to “breathe” , while there is also small quantity of water to be absorbed by many stems that will lead to dehydration. Take in mind that flowers with half opened buds will need more space to bloom.

2. Fill adequate water to the vase. Check frequently to ensure sufficient water. If possible change the water everyday. This can rinse out the bacteria. Sufficient water is the most important factor to keep flowers fresh.

3. Leaves submerged in the water will encourage the growth of bacteria. Remove them.

4. Put some freshener in the water. Be sure to add it again each time you change the water. Freshener from the flower shop usually contains of nutrient and preservative chemical. To keep your cut flowers fresh, you can replace this freshener with a teaspoonful of sugar for the nutrient and another teaspoonful of salt as means of preserving. This is the quantity for 1 liter water.

5. Don’t place them any place that gets warm, such as under direct sunlight, near the stove,

6. Keep your flowers away from fruit bowl. Ripe fruits release ethylene gas, which will cause the flowers deteriorate faster.

Those tips of keeping cut flowers fresh that can expand the lifespan of your flowers for about 2 – 4 days longer. But if you can’t even think that your beautiful flowers will finally go the garbage box anyway, then an idea of preserving them will probably make a better choice.
